Founded by David Isay in 2003, StoryCorps is an independent, non-profit organization that’s created the largest single collection of human voices – over 100,000 individuals participating across 60,000+ interviews. These stories are typically captured inside of a StoryBooth (think small recording studio) with a facilitator, as opposed to live on stage in front of an audience.
Sometimes an interview, other times a two-way conversation, and in some cases more of a narrative revelation, but always unscripted. This method leads to a deeper, more heartfelt story or interchange that’s less about an audience reaction and far more about preserving memories for future generations. Think biography instead of screenplay.
Recordings are archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.
